Maxwell Right Hand Thumb Rule

Concept Explanation

Maxwell’s Right Hand Thumb Rule

This rule helps to find the direction of magnetic field lines around a straight current—carrying conductor.

If a straight current carrying wire is imagined to be held in right hand, with thumb stretched along the direction of current, the direction of magnetic field produced by the current is in the direction in which the fingers are curled.

It is also known as Maxwell's Corkscrew rule. Suppose the tip of a rotating corkscrew or simply screw advances in the direction of the current. Then the direction of rotation of its handle or head gives the direction of the field lines.
